well alot of english words are derived from german words; it is because the first type of english was in the early AD when the saxons came to britain bringing some middle age german, over the years it has changed, taken in some latin words that existed in britain before the anglo-saxons (from the roman empire), early celtic words and also normandy french(from 1066) and some norse language, so english is a big mix of loads of languages. (alot is german though)

english and german are indogerman languages.
french, spanish and italian are roman languages.
