Jewelry advertisements usually focus on gender and sexuality roles. It tells us specifically that relationships isn't fulfilling without a diamond. This example defines the way in which ads reinforce gender roles to society- In effect, people are subconsciously accepting these values as the norm. It also touches the concept of Marxism. When people feel alienated from the demands of the capitalist world, ads (such as Zales) manipulates us by pushing our conscious realization about capitalism into our subconscious mind. Therefore, (from a Marxist perspective) the ruling class controls us by using ads to to think what they want us to think which begins another cycle of alienation.
I always wondered what someone who has never been loved thought of jewelry commercials.

thank you so much. I'm writing a paper on how advertising works, and i really needed one of this examples. my thesis is they don't sell you the product, but rather an emotion or feeling you crave, like love and sex as seen here. message: by our shiny rocks and you'll fall in love and have sex. what bull shit.

If you are dumb enough to have a commercial sway you into buying something, than you deserve to have your money taken.

@4evercapitalist they don't generate wealth; what, you think they just make that money appear out of nowhere? no, they get that money fair and square by working very hard to acquire the necessary skills to fuck that money out of the consumer, and to do it in such a way that the consumer LIKES IT.

Not subconsciously, I consciously accepts these values as the norm. As far as the ruling class controlling us tell that to the idiots in Washington who seem to want to control us by stealing from those who generate wealth and giving it to those who don't
