Tour of 1978 with Shenandoah. Arlo wrote the music to Adrian Mitchell's poem. Adrian wrote this poem about his friend, Victor Jara.

The sentiment in this beautiful, classic piece also expresses the life and spirit of the Seeger and Guthrie families as well as people like Harry Chapin and Joan Baez! May this spirit never die, and let us pray that nothing akin to the song's ending ever happens on or near our shores. We must all remain vigilant.

With Bush's "Patriot Act" and following legislation this is not impossible in the U.S. today. Why hasn't Obama abrogated these laws?

I loved this track when I picked up Arlo Guthrie's 1976 album 'Amigo.' It takes on special poignancy after Dec. 28 2012, with the news these long decades later that Chile has charged 8 retired army officers with the torture and murder of Victor Jara, the people's poet, killed in Sept. 1973 after the coup against a democratically elected government the Nixon-Kissinger regime could not tolerate.

Maybe justice at last- Chile charges eight people in Victor Jara killing.
"A Chilean judge has ordered the arrest of eight ex-army lieutenants in connection with the 1973 murder of folk singer and leftist icon Victor Jara. Two were charged with murder, while six were said to be accomplices. "

Many years ago I worked with a guy from Chile. I once asked him: "If I had terminal cancer and decided to go out doing humanity a huge favor and went down to Chile and killed Pinochet would everybody there consider me a hero?" He said: "They would all hate you forever." I said: "You serious!? Why!?" He said: "Because they don't want him dead, they want to torture him alive for as long as possible, over and over, by every conceivable method."

Pinochet's evil did visit our shores. His assasins murdered an exiled diplomat and former ambassador, Orlando Letelier and his American co-worker Ronni Moffit with a car bomb in Washington D.C. on Sept. 21, 1976. Jara had been killed three years earlier...Sept. 15, 1973. This was the first act of terrorism on U.S. soil but because of the U.S.' attachment to the Chilean government it was downplayed and isn't a history lesson today. It should be!

Adrian Mitchell's was a great voice for freedom and justice. Thank ye Mr Guthrie for putting his words to music in memory of another champion of decency.

Arlo has been one of my all-time favourites for about 30 years. Glad I saw him live in Germany some time in the late 80s.
