If you listen to the other two rats as they leave the ship, they explain that the Swarm Lord "knocked him out cold". Whether that means he died, I don't know, but you don't see him for the remainder of the film anyway.

@seanalexanderdurand Yeah, and it cemented in my head the image of Columbus as a lovable dufus. Probably more historically accurate than thinking of him as a hero. In actual history he never did anything important on purpose.
