"La belle vie", a melody composed in 1962 by French singer-songwriter/actor Sacha Distel, became a jazz standard in 1963, when Tony Bennett recorded an English version "The Good Life", and scored a hit.
In 1973 the song got French lyrics, for an interpretation by Sacha Distel himself.

On her 2005 album "J'ai Deux Amours", full of French classics, Dee Dee Bridgewater recorded this bilingual, wonderful interpretation, pouring the very best out of the song.

"The Good Life" has also been recorded by many great singers, such as:
Shirley Horn (1963), Betty Carter (1963), Sarah Vaughan (1963), Frank Sinatra (1964), Nancy Wilson (1964), Bobby Darin (1965), Sammy Davis Jr. (1966), Ray Charles, Blossom Dearie, Julie London, ...

  • "Bridgewater takes a gamble on this album with the 10-minute "La Belle Vie (The Good Life)" (...), however this track takes its time getting off the ground as she hits each note brilliantly, drawing you in and leaving you hanging on, evoking images of a smoky jazz bar of yesteryear. And, yes, most likely one in Paris. The tenderness of her delivery is the selling point. Just when it might put some to sleep, Bridgewater breaks out and brings the song to another sultry, svelte level." PopMatters
