In German, "National" is pronounced NAHT-ZEE-O-NAHL, with the O having the same sound as in "rope". So, the first two syllables, to an English-speaker, sound like Nazi.

In some languages (in Italian for example) the therm: "Nationalsocialism" is written "Nazionalsocialismo". So perhaps the Z comes from this kind of way of writing.
