DIY 6-Speed Shifter for sim-racing games (rFactor / LFS) made from an Arduino and an old joystick!

A demo of a 6-Speed shifter I made.
The design is just a prototype.
I'm currently making the shift-pattern out of a steel plate.
Then it will get a leather cover like a real shifter.

The joystick used is a very old serial one.
For years it was waiting for a new purpose, now it has found one!
The shifter works surprisingly well.

The game in the demo is rFactor, the steering wheel a Logitech MOMO Racing Force Feedback.

Short description of the setup:
The Arduino is routed to the X/Y axis of the joystick.
It reads the values of it, then determines the desired gear.
The Arduino sends joystick byte data trough USB to a COM port on my pc.
The PC runs PPJoy, a serial joystick emulator wich receives the joystick data from the COM port.
PPJoy then executes this joystick data on its emulated joystick.
The configuration in-game is like how you would config any other joystick.

Find a highschool with a metal shop and you will probably get some kids to make you a much more "tuff" build for it.
