On November 18, 2010, the Palm Beach Zoo's Mexican spider monkey, Galena, turned one year old! This critically endangered species can be found in the northern areas of Central America. Its numbers are being decimated due to the killing of mother spider monkeys in the wild in order to acquire the babies that often cling to their mother's chest. These juveniles are then sold into the pet trade in Mexico. The Palm Beach Zoo's Director of Living Collections is the coordinator for the Spider Monkey Species Survival Plan (SSP) for the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). You can check out our family of spider monkeys on the primate islands located in the Cornell Tropics of the Americas exhibit.
