You may not realize this, but unless you bought your own email server hardware and software, and built and host your own infrastructure, you do not actually own your email. You are simply renting it from the provider, be it commercial or free. There is nothing physically stopping your provider from being able to access your data and you would never know it happened.
What does this mean? You have zero control over how well your email is secured, or when, how and by whom your data is accessed.
