The most important factor for using IEEE-1394 as a single digital interface for consumer electronics is that it provides an opportunity to directly connect devices to each other. This allows to produce overwrite the source to the receiver without a computer (for example, record your videos from your camcorder to the recorder) or share a single device among multiple computers without any special support.
