Russia has won the right to host FIFA World Cup in 2018. It was chosen Thursday by FIFA's executive committee over England and joint bids by Spain-Portugal and Netherlands-Belgium. Russia won despite the absence of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Zurich. At the last minute, he declined to make a final pitch for his country.

In the same way Russians do not want to be insulted, nor do we English. As an Englishman, I personally accept defeat to Russia and do not begrudge them a World Cup; they are a football-loving nation with a strong infrastructure and a long history of great players (including possibly the greatest goalkeeper who ever played the game), so try not to use the word 'losers' to insult us. We are losers, but not all bad ones. Chosing Qatar, however, is a corrupt, ridiculous joke of a decision.
