Britain boasts one of the oldest democracies on earth. Her political traditions have been admired and copied the world over. Yet today they are in crisis. Under intense media scrutiny the very fabric of our parliamentary system has been shown to be threadbare. MPs struggle vainly to repair the damage but their words have little impact. Most voters regard what they see and hear at Westminster with a mixture of derision and contempt. The seeds of mistrust were sown long ago. For decades journalists and politicians have accused one another of distorting the truth and misleading the public. All the cynicism and 'spin' has finally taken its toll.

Just how did we get into this sorry state? Will we ever be able to believe what we are told again? If trust in our system of government is to be restored are the media part of the solution or part of the problem?

With first-hand experience of both journalism and politics, Lance Price looks back over almost a century of conflict to examine what has gone wrong. He exposes liars in Downing Street and scoundrels in Fleet Street, bullies and megalomaniacs in both. He shows how prime ministers and press barons can lose touch with reality as the battles intensify. And he reveals the secret deals and conspiracies that only undermine democracy further.

To fix the system we need first to understand it. Above all we must know where power lies. Who has it and who can be relied upon to ensure it isn't abused?

Where Power Lies is the story of how powerful men and a few women have tried for generations to twist the facts to their own ends. It puts the struggle for supremacy between politics and the media into perspective. And it offers a glimmer of hope for a future in which both sides learn to trust the people with that most precious of all commodities, the truth.
