Comedian and impressionist extraordinaire Alistair McGowan muses on alternative ways to spend the £97bn that the government is currently planning to blow on new nuclear weapons.

Whilst saving Chester City FC and gagging Jeremy Clarkson are at the top of his personal list, Alistair reels off a plethora of projects on which the money could better be spent, before concluding that there's almost nothing worse, or more pointless, than wasting it replacing Trident.

So that'd be why our politicians seem to love it so much then...

  • Great video. Don't forget that the building of new nuclear weapons is also illegal under international law. So we could prosecute these people.

  • @PhantomKaratOfficial ..... LOL

  • Why would you want to gag Jeremy Clarkson?

  • Oops, don't forget university fees....

  • Let's see. Save the NHS, save public transport, fund transitional homes so kids who've been raised in care aren't suddenly kicked out onto the street with nowhere to go, save arts funding, fund research into safe disposal of nuclear waste, for those hellbent on doing something nuclear with the money.... I know this was posted last year and not this month, but I'm pretty sure the gov't could still do a lot with 97 bn other than spend it on weaponry. (Did these politicians never watch "Threads"?)

  • @Yarrick2k5

Where do you think those billions spent on war goes?

The answer is straight back into circulation..

So spending money on war isn't really 'losing' anyone money.

However I do see where you're coming from.

  • +100 respect for Mr McGowen

I always find this bizarre aswell. So much wrong, we have the money, we have the resources, we have the technology, we have the people. Yet, we spend all this money on war, weaponry, here in the UK with Trident and building those Aircraft carriers. Mixed it with other nations across the globe who spend trillions on war and chaos but the leaders preach peace. But, we do little to oppose it, me guilty as well here.

  • thinking on the humane solutions within the capitalist system = waste of time

  • i spent a while trying to come up with an intelligent comment, but at the end of the day, politicians are just *ssh*les, how do they get away with it, seriously, how do they get away with it....if this is really a democracy, put it to the public vote, 97 billion on weapons, that'll end up unused and outdated, or 97 billion back in to the country at a time of economic crisis.....democracy my ass
