I was at this concert and was attending University of Wyoming. Being a music ed major, I was ecstatic to see that Elton John was coming to Laramie. I was also shocked how people cheered when they heard their home state in a song by EJ, but you're focusing on that too much. Yes, it's horrible they aren't paying enough attention to the lyrics. But do you listen intently to songs you've never heard before?

For Matthew Shepard. When Elton gives live performances, he often changes a few notes here and there, he embellishes the song runs up and down the chords. Here he, he plays it in a very "matter of fact" style. No embellishment, just plain chords. I'm sure he did this on purpose, given the circumstances of Matthew's death and this recording was in the Town where Matt died..listen to Elton's TRUE voice... like fine wood..burnished and lovely. I wonder at the audience reaction somewhat,

I wonder what Matt would think of this song. He'd probably be embarrassed at the publicity his death had received, but he'd be proud that others thought so much of him that they lifted him up off that fencepost (so to speak) for a greater cause.
Aaron McKinney should have this song playing in his head, but he is really unrepentent

this was an awesome concert. THhis song is so emotional.

A profoundly powerful - and beautiful song - one of my EJ favorites.
It's rather disturbing though that so many people started clapping and cheering when they heard Wyoming in the first chorus.
Were they even listening to what EJ was singing?
God - his voice has matured and deepened so beautifully over the years - like burnished mahogany.

@garyokee you are the first person to pick up on that, i also was very shocked at the concert to hear the audience applaud the mention of "wyoming" when the entire show was clearly in tribute to a young man that was brutally murdered in their own community. i realize their intention was not what it may seem, but still such an awkward moment.
