This is a short experimentation in a philosophical mode known as skepticism. Rather than being an analytical approach to the subject, I trace out my thinking to make this video, never knowing how 'complete' or 'conclusive' or 'coherent' it might be. Its philosophy, dummy, not schema.

If i get enough comments I will do another video because I have a lot more to say on this subject.

Upcoming PHIL101 videos include an introduction to Logic, to the Mind/Body problem, to consciousness, to Ethics and to the problem of God(s).

  • i like the silence thing. another one i use thats kind of a throw back to the human animal is just intuitive tone based responses... impossible to type, but sound something like huh? or ehh or hmmm.... it can be an effective non directive way to root out some withheld ideas from a speaker.

  • But seriously - you need to make some videos because you obviously have a lot to say - I look forward to them!!

  • do you mean a logical tautology or a rhetorical tautology?

  • "i think i would assert that the truth is the past and present regardless of what is said." - this is a logical tautology similar to the ones found in Plato's Protagoras and Sophist dialogues. This is something a lot of people misunderstand. For Truth to be 'true,' it has to, by definition, be true for all time, past and future. What people misunderstand is that whether or not we can know or have access to that truth is what is debatable.

  • i think i would assert that the truth is the past and present regardless of what is said.

linguistic truth is based on symbolic comparison, and in the mode of language there are more possibilities for inaccuracies then there are for accurate statements. no question threatens the existence of empirical reality, and questions like "do i exist at all" rely completely on ones personal attachment to language. with or without words, perception is only exactly as it seems.

  • "with or without words, perception is only exactly as it seems"

That's another tautology, perception, by definition, is of 'what seems.'

  • I dig your video, very cool, but I have a small problem with your use of the word "Anarchy" I think that the word Chaos would do more for Anarchist trying to live in our society without the label of window-smacher,etc.I thank nature for my skepticism, towards a belief, religion. Thanks for the post !

  • Nice memory. I made this video.

  • Battle of Hastings was 1066

  • Thank you for caring for philosophy, and being in-depth without being redundant. These videos are a great deed.

  • I liked your note for this post. " Its (sic)philosophy, dummy, not schema." How is schema not philisophical?

  • Skepticism can't exist without positive theorizing.

And nothing of worth could be created without positive theories.

Skepticism is needed to keep us humble about our theorizing, but trying to eliminate positive theorizing is as misguided as it is impossible (not that the speaker implies this).

In fact, skepticism helps positive theorizing by finding anamolies that might lead to other discoveries, and with that more positive theories!

  • This is good stuff man, I like it

  • It's fun to think about, but I wouldn't kill myself to see if I can change channels. You can enjoy a dream. It beats being a brain in a jar without any stimulation or sight.
