Posted upon request; Giorgio Tozzi sings "Confutatis" from Verdi's Messa da Requiem. This is from a live 1957 Philadelphia performance with Eugene Ormandy conducting probably the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. The other soloists were Richard Tucker, Leontyne Price, and Nan Merriman.

  • One of the greatest bass ever.

Lovely and powerful voice, great musicality, great emotion and great sense of lirism.

  • For me Tozzi had he most beautiful basso cantante voice of his time. I heard him often at the Met and on disk. His recording of the Verdi Requiem with Price, Elias and Bjorling conducted by Reiner is my favorite. Thanks for this posting.

  • wonderful!he is realy one of the best basses ever.thank you

  • While Tozzi isn't my absolute favorite basso, I always loved his singing of this particular piece above all others. He has a velvety, rich voice that, while not profondo by any means, is resonant and large. We could do with more singers like him these days!

  • Tozzi's voice was lovely, free-flowing and powerful. He was an intelligent and sensitive artist. But to my ears, Tozzi's voice always suggested its baritone origins, lacking ideal richness. Don't get me wrong; Tozzi was excellent, but I prefer some others in this repetoire, including Hines, Siepi and Ghiaurov -- plus Mardones, Pinza and Journet, if we go back farther:) --

  • His singing in Martha in the 1961 met brdcst. also with Tucker is wonderful even though it was done in English and he added great singing to a great cast.

  • He was a terrific Singer and had the voice that could do most anything even sing in the south pacific recording for Brazzi who did not sing. He is from my home town of Chicago, he was so good in Italian opera that many Americans think of him as being a native Italian.

  • I agree; his sheer musicality is what made Tozzi stand apart from so many other singers. For me his basic instrument is also just gorgeous and speaks to me on a deep level; very few singers have this effect on me, i.e., of connecting to my soul. Others who do are Callas, Stratas, Ferrier, Corelli, Muzio, Ponselle, Tebaldi, Vishnevskaya, Arkhipova, Vallin, Bjoerling, Bastianini, and very few others.

  • Fantastic! Thank you so much for posting this.

Quite apart from his great voice, his phrasing is just so musical.
