For the first time in a century, a British monarch has set foot on Irish soil. Queen Elizabeth II has arrived in Dublin for an historic four day state visit.

The British monarch met Irish President Mary McAleese before laying a wreath at Dublin's Garden of Remembrance.

The visit is meant to symbolise reconciliation and emphasise the strong bond between the two countries, built on generations of Irish emigration.

The last monarch to make a state visit was the Queen's grandfather George V in 1911.

  • This is an unrealistic scenario, the Queen bowing down before the Republicans-killed-by-her-worshipers graves and the Republican Irish people bowing down before the Queen! The strangeness of the human being behaviour is boundless. We're capable to fight, slaughter a nation then make peace, bow-down before our victims graves and sometimes make love.Others start in reverse, they love each other, make love, have babies then they split up and harshly fight the other.By far i do prefer the 1st scenario

  • this report says "Ireland was given self rule in 1921" - lol, not likely, it had to fight tooth and nail for its independence!.

  • I like the Irish commenters who have positive view of the visit :)

  • Ireland would be screwed if it wasn't for our trade ties.

The relationship growing stronger while the terrorists get weaker.

  • God Save the Queen....

Sincerely from one who admires and loves her Majesty so much...

    God Save The Queen....

  • As as Irish man and an Irish speaker I applaude the visit. :-)

  • @pLayer1murphy I think you'll find they are spelled McAleese, Pearse and Collins - not to mention believe. It's also (currently) the National Anthem of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Don't let your noble race down by appearing so thick

  • @The1CamBo An ignorant Texan? Whatever next!

  • @0101100101100

    who me or the queen?

  • I think this visit has changed many of us Irish's opinions about her. Most of us have found a new respect for the Queen, and Britain. I think this visit is just amazing.. Peace looks nearer than ever!
