I saw this production - and Ann-Margret was terrific. AND she was right for the role - it's not a part for a young chippie who can belt out full voice contralto 60 second notes. She was charming.
I will say that the original production was more emotionally engrossing ... but that was certainly NOT the fault of Ann-Margret who was delightful.
Oh FYI all you actors, Ann-Margret sold out everywhere we played. She also was wonderful to work with, not like the "flash-in-the-pan" celebrities you see trying to Broadway today (emphasis on TRY) And we did play in Connecticut (Wallingford) where Variety reviewed us and gave us a GREAT review. Maybe you guys who are so bitter auditioned and got cut......oh, so sad!
She was not smart enough to say "No thanks" even though she was smart enough not to take the show anywhere near NYC or LA where she knew she would be SKEWERED. Only wish she skipped Miami as well. I saw Roxie Lucas do Miss Mona. What a show when you have an actress instead of an old mare leading the show. Anything is possible? Not MISS MArgaret singing or acting
She's a nice woman, But I saw this production with her and it was horrible. People were walking out at intermission. My college production was 100% better and that was in 1988. Check out The Bus From Amarillo on here (by Laine)---now that is what it should be like!
