Dmitri would be a sensation in this role. But then, when isn't he? The mere presence of such a star raises the temperature of the whole performance. Sumi Jo is excellent here, as always.

Bette DAvis once said that there'd never be a rivalry between two women movie stars--they'd be two clever for that. But then she said that she could give a list of rivalries between men and women actors. You have to wonder if there is similar such things between high powered baritones and sopranos like these!!

Figraro was originally for a rather lower baritone just as Rosina was orginally for a mezzo. On early recordings of the Largo most of the baritones skip the high Gs. Later the barber was sung by heavy Verdi types like Ruffo, Merrill, and Ausensi. Today it's often sung by high baritones like Hampson. Hvorovtosky IMHO is just about perfect. He has the agility that is sometimes missing. His only problem is that he looks naturally aristocratic. He looks like the disguised Count not his servant.

@ocuptoi One is sop, and the other one is mezzo. They are totally different.

@ocuptoi Yes, It was composed for mezzo at first and I read an article somewhere that he composed an optional aria for soprano-Rosina. I forgot her name.. Famous soprano in that time. Anyway, I love Bartoli, too. But, I just think that those two versions are totally different at every aspects. Pitch, dynamics, runs, .... Also agree that the final note is not quite good, but after those long high notes & fast virutuoso-like scales, that seems quite a small glitch. Just my opinion. Good day!
