Just looks like SSAO to me. Awesome job though, I've tried my luck at SSAO in blender game engine and it wasn't nearly as optimized and defined as this.
Nice work there. Shadowing is tough for me. It looks so real and not real at the same time, just because the balls keep moving with no friction. It's like they're alive :P
looks like all the balls have a negative light inside them. I call haxorz!

This is called Ambient Occlusion , not soft shadows , I guess.

i'd suggest toning the shadows on balls given by other balls abit, and spreading them out a little. Very realistic simulation though
