Corvette returned to the world's most-demanding testing ground -- Germany's famed Nurburgring -- and recorded lap times that rank among the fastest recorded for a production car.

As detailed on video, the Corvette ZR1 recorded a lap time of 7:19.63, more than six seconds faster than the previous Corvette-best recorded in 2008. A lap video featuring the Corvette Z06 will be released soon.

"Testing at the Nurburgring is one of the important methods we have to validate our car in the toughest track conditions," says Tadge Juechter, Corvette vehicle line director and chief engineer.

Measuring 20.8 km (12.9 miles) and including some 154 turns, the Nurburgring's Nordschleife ("north loop") is widely considered the world's most-demanding course. As was the case at Corvette's last test in 2008, the car was driven by Corvette engineer Jim Mero and was a full production model with no performance modifications. This test was to validate the car's added performance technology coming to production later this summer for the 2012 model year.

Corvette's improved performance for 2012 begins with the new, optional Michelin® Pilot® Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires, which are available on the two highest-performing models, the lightweight, 505-hp (377 kW) Z06 and the maximum-performance, 638-hp (476 kW) supercharged ZR1. They are competition-oriented tires, optimized for warm, dry conditions to increase cornering and handling capability.

When combined with the Corvette's exclusive Performance Traction Management (PTM) technology -- which manages torque delivery for maximum performance -- the tires set new benchmarks for Corvette performance. Engineers estimate an 8-percent gain in maximum lateral acceleration, to more than 1.1g, and improved braking distance.

  • Americans should learn to pronounce Nürburgring.

  • The GTR is a great car and it made other car brands improve thier products, the result of which you now see. I like all cars, but I do not allow my bias to blind me to the reality of the facts.

  • Buster silence leaves the car engine talk

  • @bimmen325 That's pathetic, why don't you understand what you are talking about first. 1) no shit the LFA is faster first off its almost 4 times the gar's price and the mods they did for the test made the car not street legal the 2012 gtr did not even change the street tires2) the 911gt2rs is way lighter and barely beats it again way more money and the zr-1 beat it by less than 5 seconds and has a slower 0-60 and costs 25g more for that price i could shave a couple seconds off the gtr

  • If u go on wiki they have the zr1 with a fastest lap of 7.19...and unlike the Viper ACR u can drive it around town with out breaking ur bones from the stiff track only suspension...not to mention minus the UGLY wing...

  • @zr1vetteman09 He doesn't race for a living but he does have a lot of racing experience. And he helps design the chassis so he knows the cars very well.

  • @laaloboyzwestside Its not the only supercar that's supercharged though. Koenigsegg has used two on the same engine before. I don't think the supercharger is an equal advantage over the stripped out viper with similar horsepower.

  • what a beautiful ride.

  • @Ch1town92 wrong about hp, the 2012 is 810HP to the tires, no mods to improve anything here, other than safety mods, such as a minimal built rollcage to the interior, u right about the purchasing off the floor tho, and not to mention a computer upgrade with zero mechanical mods will make over 1200hp

  • NO!!! I said SHUT YOUR FUCKING TWAT ! ! !
