Speechless! Until now, the "gold standard" of recordings of this work was, for me, Gieseking's--but seeing and hearing Kempff's interpretation on this rare video makes me feel as if I am experiencing the piece for the first time! How vivid and alive he makes each one of these "Dances of the Davidsbuendler"!

Wilhelm Kempff and Sviatoslav Richter are the most significant Interpreters of Schumann´s piano music imo!

Berlinzerberus, thanks from me too for this wonderful gift. <i have listened and watched all 4 videos - so nice to see the hands on the piano. There is one small thing that bothers me, not only in his performance. In the second piece the melody shd sound dah dah in crotchets, but it tends to sound dah dah-um-pah because of the accompaniment. I have tried very hard at the piano to distinguish melody from accompaniment.

Die drei punktierten Viertelnoten sind Haltenoten, quasi zweistimmig komponiert, die, etwas umständlich notiert, den Pianisten zwingen sollen, den Akkord auch festzuhalten. Insofern ist das 'dah dah-um-pah' tatsächlich der Verlauf der Melodie zum g'' hoch. Man kann eigentlich in dem 2. Stück nicht von Melodie und Begleitung sprechen, denn es ist ein Gewebe, das von beiden Händen erzeugt wird und das sich wunderbar emporschwingt und die so zarte Melodie anstimmt.

Because piano performance is relegated to the recreation of perfect museum pieces. Conservatories have pushed the piano competition mentality too far. Great pianists like Cortot and Kempf would NEVER succeed in today's environment. (OK maybe Kempf.. maybe..) The pianists of a previous generation made their living pleasing their audience and attracting students. The pianists of today make their living by pleasing judges, professors and getting tenure. The result, highly talented bores!

Kempff hat nie 'banal' gespielt, nur, wenn die Musik banal wurde, wurde er es auch. 'Unsauber', ja, manchmal, weil er, wie so mancher deutscher Pianist, nicht viel und gerne übte, weil das als 'ungenial' galt. Grobheit kann ich in seinem Spiel ebenfalls nicht entdecken, Wilhelm Kempff war eigentlich das Gegenteil von 'grob': filigran, feingliedrig, phantasievoll und poetisch.

@berlinzerberus Ich brauche Zeit um ueber Ihre Analyse nachzudenken. Was Sie sagen stimmt wohl . das Gewebe seh ich, aber fuer jetzt denke ich noch, dass die Begkeitungsfigur leiser gehalten muesste. Ich will mir wieder die Interpretation von Clara's Schuelerin, Fanny Davies anhoeren. Gewebe oder nicht, Ich versuche die zentrale Melodie festzuhalten um das Gewebe etwas hintergruendig zu halten

@ilnvita No, there are still pianists who play as well as this. I heard radu Lupu play this work live and have heard other young pianists play Schumann wonderfully.
