Canadian Trooper Karine Blais of 12e Régiment Blindé du Canada based at Canadian Forces Base in Valcartier, Quebec, returns home along the Highway of Heroes on April 16, 2009 at 4:14 p.m. EST.

Trooper Blais was killed and four Canadian soldiers were wounded when their armoured vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device north of Kandahar City in the Shah Wali Kowt District at 5:00 p.m. Kandahar time on April 13, 2009.

Trooper Blais, of Les Méchins, Québec, was just 21 years old and she was only in her second week of her first tour of duty in Afghanistan. Trooper Blais wanted to drive a tank and become a mechanic.

Trooper Blais often asked her mother if she was proud of her, a statement issued by the Blais family said. The statement went on to provide the Blais family reply to this question - "We are always proud of you, despite the sadness that has enveloped us. You are our ray of sunshine and you will always be in our hearts. Your sense of humour and your vivacity will remain forever in our hearts."

This video was taken at the Victoria Park overpass in Scarborough (Toronto). There were at least three Canadian soldiers on the overpass, two Canadian veterans and many other proud Canadians.

  • We thank God every day for people like Karine Blais, who risk their lives in order for us to continue to provide for our families and ourselves. It's sad to see that she has fallen during her tour but today, to me, she's risen as an Angel. Even though I'll never be able to tell her in person, I thank you, Miss Karine, for what you've done for America.
