The Two Half Hitch is the perfect knot for hanging a clothesline—or hammock—between two trees or posts.

To complete this How-To you will need:

A single length of rope
Something to hitch to, such as a post, pole, or ring

Step 1: Pass end through ring

Pass the end of the rope up through the ring from below.

Step 2: Pass behind standing part

Pass it behind the remaining end—or 'standing part'—of the rope.

Step 3: Pass end through loop

Bring the end back up and pass it through the eye of the loop you've just formed.

Step 4: Pull tight

Pull it tight to complete a Half Hitch.

Step 5: Pass end through standing part

Pass the end of the rope behind the standing part again.

Step 6: Bring through 2nd loop & tighten

Bring it back up and through this second loop you've just formed (making a second Half Hitch) and tighten.

  • @hoodiejames it could save my life, i dont have dexterity to untie knotts. half hitch is perfect easy to tie, strong, easy to untie, in a survival situation you dont want to lose 3 feet of your rope cause you cant untie a knott

  • thanks. im in the OA dance teams and am making my own Porky hair roach... ty :)

  • so its pretty much 2 overhand knots?

  • @rgoodson979 look were from different spots and the two half hitch knot works the best from where im from because of strong tides but it is a very easy knot to untie if u tie it correctly

  • @12peter96

Dude, Licensed Captain and Deck hand for 12 years. I know lol. You can use both. But figure eights do the job and its much safer than a half hitch. Because on occasion the half hitch is extremely hard to untie.

  • @rgoodson979 no we use the two half hitch made with the bight...i would know this cause my uncle is a fisherman and ive gone fishing with him for the past two years

  • @12peter96

no we use the figure eight.

  • fisherman use this knot when they tie up there boat, except they create a bight when they pull it through

  • good knot but is much stronger if passed around the loop twice before doing the hitch

  • 1 Round, and a reef knot.
