As a historian, it amazes me that people don't get that stories were embelished to fit set narratives right up to the middle ages. Just look at how many Medieval biographies/ Autobiographies follow the narrative of St Augustine's confessions, which in turn follows the narrative of the Gospels followed. Why is the next step back so hard to see? By Narrative I dont mean exact copy, just standardised 'bits that should be in the story' ie. amazing birth, suiffering, oft a horrible death etc.
