Evil overcame good in the 1954 World Cup quarter-final as a now-infamous game between the two most talented teams on Earth descended into carnage.

Hungary, known as the Mighty Magyars, had come into the competition on the back of a four-year unbeaten streak and were well-deserving favourites to emerge triumphant in Switzerland.

The Hungarians, inspired by the brilliant Ferenc Puskas, were reigning Olympic champions and had stunned the footballing world with a 6-3 demolition of England at Wembley in 1953.

Their opponents Brazil were also a dangerous team. Runners-up at the 1950 World Cup, they were expected by many to challenge for the title.

The two sides met at the Wankdorf Stadium in Berne on June 27th. But a match that was expected to go down as a classic quickly degenerated into a viciously ill-tempered affair.

Hungary started much the better side and quickly established a 2-0 lead, and although Brazil soon began to fight back, their efforts were hindered by niggling fouls from the Europeans.

One such foul earned Brazil a penalty, from which Djalma Santos converted to make it 2-1. Thereafter, the game grew progressively violent.

Jozsef Bozsik reacted badly to a crude challenge from Nilton Santos, with a punch-up ensuing. Both players were subsequently dismissed by the helpless English referee Arthur Ellis.

As the violence escalated, a raging Djalma Santos allegedly gave up on the match to seek vengeance on Zoltan Czibor. Brazil's Humberto then became the third to be sent off after he kicked out at Gyula Lorant.

Hungary ended the game as 4-2 victors, but even the final whistle could not halt the brawling. Puskas was said to have struck Pinheiro with a bottle and caused a three-inch cut, although conflicting reports blame a Hungarian fan for the assault.

Regardless of the culprit, the incident further incensed the Brazil players, who proceeded to invade the Hungary dressing room. An all-out fight, with fists, boots and bottles erupted.

At least one Hungary player was left unconscious and their coach Gustav Sebes suffered a four-inch cut after he too was struck with a broken bottle.

The ugly scenes left a dreadful scar on what should have been a wonderful occasion.

Nonetheless, it was Hungary who ultimately triumphed and progressed to the semi-final, where Uruguay were also beaten 4-2.

A twist in the tale was to follow in the final though, where West Germany, who had been demolished 8-3 by Sebes' side earlier in the tournament, pulled off a shock 3-2 win.

The result stunned the football world and condemned Puskas et al to be labelled the greatest side never to win the World Cup.

  • ki volt a 20-as jatekos ?

  • Hungary were never going to be allowed to win the world cup in 54.It was part of the cold war and as a country living under the soviet system they were never going to get what they richly deserved.

  • hungary was the best team in those years and they deserved the world cup but they lost to germany by sheer misfortune or may be they were too confident of winning

  • @dimenyandris Simply wonderful? It was the dirtiest most violent game in international history. The police were called at the end and they were still fighting in the changing rooms after.

  • @pavleka Beautiful game, are you being sarcastic? This was the most violent international game in history.

  • @hunsylvania1 Merci my friend..
