Philip Lasser, faculty member of The Juilliard School and president of the European American Musical Alliance, presents an analysis of the western chromatic scale as a by-product of each of the church modes. This analysis continues with a re-examination of Bach's Prelude 1 in C Major from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I and a comparison with Debussy's Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum from Children's Corner.

This analysis was taped by Lane Harder on the last day of class (July 30) at the 2008 European American Musical Alliance Summer Music Workshop in Salle Cortot at L'Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris.

EAMA offers summer music programs in composition, conducting and chamber music in Paris, France - taught in the tradition of the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Philip Lasser's analysis treatise, The Spiraling Tapestry: An Inquiry into the Contrapuntal Fabric of Music, is available at www.rasseleditions.com.
