My name is Ed Massey and i had the priveledge of being in the band under your Dad from 75 through 80, and cannot put in words what an experience and how much fun and life lessons that help me today in life! Thank you Jim McMahan!!!!
Those were some of my best memories. I was in the band from 77 - 81. I was 2nd lieutenant my junior year and 1st piccolo my junior/senior year. Mr McMahan was one of my favorite teachers. Such an encourager to me. I still play flute at church just for fun. Wish there were more videos to watch. This has been fun!
I have'nt heard this in 29yrs, but I can remember how to play every note. Thank you Mr McMahan for some very good memories and all you did for us. Hope you are doing okay. G. Young
My name is Brian McCarson. I played trombone 84-88. We were not as big as the band when your dad was director, but we had the heart of a lion. I would not trade being a part of the Green Machine for anything! We were hard to beat! Mr. Mathews inspired us to be the best, and we did just that. I guess he got that from being a member of the band under your dad!
Thank you for clearing this up! I know I did not imagine that giant trophy in the band room. I actually contacted the current band director at Berea, Lance Stockton, and he stated that many of the tropheys had been put in storage. Mr.McMahan, if this is you responding, I remember you watching our practices. Curt Mathews was our director then, and all we wanted was to be the proud band you had started. My greatest memories were being a part of the Green Machine!
At the end of the competition, Dalton was declared winner by 1/100 of a point. During the parade, an error was found on one judge's sheet by our guard instructor, Bill Jacobus. The judges and officials double-checked all sheets for Berea and Dalton. It was a tie! Both bands were declared co-champions and each received a banner and championship trophy. - Jim McMahan (2 of 2)
I started the band program at Berea from scratch in 1962. Was there 62 68. Returned and stayed 71 81. I wrote all the arrangements for this show. Drum Major was Michael Brown who is now a staff arranger for the U. S. Army band. Trumpet soloist was Jeff Swafford who plays with The Fantastic Shakers. Drill was written by Vince Clayton, a former student and now a band director. (1 of 2)
VID...if you will post an email address I will send you a picture of us sitting in front of the banner and trophy...as well as about 15 news articles stating that Dalton High School won the 1980 Desoto Nationals. Youtube won't allow links in there comment boxes or I would link it right here.
You may have seen something in 84...I walked off of THAT field THAT night with all the hardware. That said, i would love to know this whole "Berea won" backstory when they were 2nd that night.
