What about those who profess no faith yet understand the history and meaning of such performances within a larger cultural context? I don't think believing in something should negate your ability to appreciate something. If it weren't for interest in these things, it might just slip into history unnoticed.

not all foreigners are out to see these wonderfully sacred places for "cheap thrills". you shouldn't assume that tourists are going for that reason. Just as there is a varying level of respect in your country's people, there is in other country's. If shrines were to be kept secret, how could we ever spread cultural awareness and respect. I understand your anger though.

so sad all those tourists are just there to gook at this performance. I think places like Itsukushi Shrine should be banned from tourists and foreigners. Only devout believers in shinto/buddhism should be permitted inside to witness this, not these foreigners who appreciate nothing except cheap thrills.
