"Thoes guns should never have been put here" - the East End, and Eastenders, were ever expendable - in the First World War, factories producing dynamite were sited miles from habitations - except in the East End, where the Silvertown factory was just over the road from houses and schools - and arehouses contatining highly combustible products. The tragedy of Bethnal Green is compounded by how completely it's been forgotten by people in general

The 67th anniversary of the disaster is on 3rd March when a play about it will be performed at Bethnal Green library at 6pm. Tickets are £7.50 available on the website or 01474 702513

Alf Morris and Derek Spicer DO school talks and I'm sure would be delighted to be invited to your school. They're very popular. See the website (stairway to heaven memorial org)

ALSO Everyone is invited to the Memorial Service on Sunday 7th March at 2pm at St. John on Bethnal Green Church (right next door to Bethnal Green underground station). There will be an exhibition about the disaster, refreshments, a model of the proposed Memorial and a blessing and wreath laying on the stairs where everyone died.
Barbara Windsor's coming to lay a wreath too!! Good for you Babs!!!

I teach in Bethnal Green and think about those pour souls every day as I walk on those stairs. Respect is due to you,Mr Morris. You would be very welcome to speak about your experiences to children at Bonner Primary School, where I work(just call and ask for me). This tragedy should never be forgotten.
