Jolicloud is based on Ubuntu Linux, but is tweaked for netbooks and other computers with limited disk storage, memory, and screen size.

Jolicloud was designed for easy installation, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 3G modem support all included.

The operating system supports all the major netbooks, including models from Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, MSI, Samsung and Sony. Jolicloud claims the OS supports 98% of netbooks with out-of-the-box compatibility.

Version 1.0 of the operating system incorporates a user interface built with HTML5 that includes an application launcher, a library of compatible applications with one-click installation and removal, a display of all machines associated with user account, and a social activity stream that enables users to compare installed applications.

The launcher displays only those applications supported on the library, but that launcher can be viewed from any machine running Jolicloud. Account management is available from any computer with an HTML5-compatible browser

  • it hasn't actually "recently" been lounched. Version 1.0 the stable version has been launched but the beta and alpha build has been around since 2009.

Its is built for netbooks but it has some really cool touch screen features which make it very good for tablets also.

Question: Do you think this would be a wide spread idea for computing? IE chrome OS and such. Do you think the move to the cloud is a good thing?

  • @AlphaComputing Yeah but that's Beta and Alpha builds. its like saying windows 7 was release when it was in beta and alpha (they are for testing, bug finding and so on). its only release when its fully available in a stable version and its officially announce by the company.

To the question. I think there is still work to be done, but its getting better and betting and i do think its going to be a good thing.

  • I think you make a very good point that I haven't seen anyone else point out yet. ie, Jolicloud gives your OLD netbook a new lease of life. I installed it on my newish Dell Mini 1012 and it runs far worse than Windows 7, since Windows 7 takes advantage of ALL the hardware in my Netbook, where as Jolicloud does not. For a bog standard or older Netbook I'd say this would be ideal, but for newer systems it's going to leave much of your hardware unutilised!

  • @ElRhinoProductions

Thanks, I will take that into consideration. I have a 19" monitor, but it isn't HD. I am using DVI. So it should be alright, even though the gc is nvidia.

  • @zzTeChJoEzz just dont use a HDTV with it, it clips off about an inch of screen and its not easily fixed on an nVidia card as their Linux drivers are TERRIBLE!

  • A very sociable OS.

Never used Linux. Will do one day though.
