  • How would you know if you tighten your bow enough?

  • @kumxuanhao In general, you want to tighten the bow so that the hair is the width of the stick away from the stick. In other words, if the stick is 1/4" thickness, you want to tighten the bow so that the hair is 1/4" away from the stick. There should still be some curve to your bow (that is called camber). If you tighten the bow so much that there is no camber left, you can warp the bow, lose wedges (which hold the hair in the bow), or actually cause the hair to come out in one big hunk.

  • Do you have to keep scratching the rosin after the first time?

  • @KayJoRum Not usually. Once you have rosin on the bow, the friction of that rosin will help pick up more rosin from the rosin cake.

  • I dropped my resin and it broke in two pieces the first time I was resining my bow. Should I get a new one, will the cracks affect the string? The first few times I was bowing my bass I was getting some crazy harmonics. Is that normal? I am trying to to apply much pressure but it seems like I may be doing it wrong. Thoughts?

  • @GoodAnytime If the edges of the broken rosin are sharp, they can actually cut the hair. It won't hurt to use rosin that is broken or cracked otherwise. You can dull the edges of the rosin with some very fine sandpaper.

  • Just got my cecilio today! :D!

  • Perfect. It has been 40 years since I played the violin and I am going to start to play again, but don't recall a thing other than the violin has four strings and can make beautiful sounds. Your demo on how to rosin a new bow has been very helpful. Works like a charm. Thanks. Now if I can find YouTube video that is approx. 2:11 long that will get me to play like Paganini. :-)

  • Is that farm animal noises I hear in the background?

  • thanks lady! I was very depressed because I thought my electric violin didnt work and I thought I'd have to wage war on ebay. but thanks to you many innocent lives were saved - im kidding by the way. But yeah that was informative =D
