My depiction of Page 89 of The Book
TYPHOON PILOT by Desmond J Scott.
Needing to de-stress from his Demanding Schedule and Combat and the responsibility of being the Sqn Leader
at Tangmere for 486 Sqn RNZAF
Scene: Tangmere ...A Hawker Tempest,RAF DH Mosquito and Dambuster Lancaster Bomber have Just arrived back from flying duties over the Continent. The flight crews are sitting on the lawn near the Tangmere Quonset Huts ready to scramble
Des Scott flies Typhoons every day and it is a rugged workhorse so needing something nimble...
He borrows a Spitfire from another Squadron and takes off for a flyabout around Kent.He ends up flying over and landing on The Isle of Wight and being raised on a NZ farm decides to hang out with the horses for a while. Landing on the grass runway shoulder to hone his rough landing skills he Just misses a roving fox before taxiing over to The paddock.
He gets out and relaxes out there for a while with the horses then takes off for a spin around Sandown before heading back over the English Channel where he encounters an RAF DH Mosquito and a USAF P51
Mustang on Training flights. He lowers flaps 10 d slows down and opens the canopy to give a wave to P51 pilot Major Chuck Buck-Wrangler who does the same before peeling off to a UK US Base .
Des in The Spitfire heads off over the Villages of Grayshott and Liphook in Hampshire and a fly by of The Canadian camps of Superior and Eerie near Waggoners Wells ponds before returning to TANGMERE.
Slight variations from the book to enhance Visuals as most movies do.Music could be smoother.
HOPEFULLY CORGI TOYS CAN PUT OUT A
DESMOND J SCOTT 486 SQ TYPHOON SOON

  • There are several points to this video, provided that one has read the book as many times as I have. My copy has a written comment in it, by an ERK possibly? -Who has written 'I saw this!' When a Typhoon landed still with a bomb onboard, just after touchdown the bomb came off and bounced along the runway with the aircraft. Fortunately it did not explode as it did not have time to arm itself from a small prop which was damaged when it his the runway!
