His girlfriend died and you can tell by the ambulances and cemetary at 0:35

Ok I watched it again and caught that. I guess I got confused cause it shows them hugging then he's on the couch looking sad.

yea, you can tell by the coloring/tone when it's a flashback or when it's present.
