Vanity Fair [Circus]

Becky's Sharp's Circus. I think this is an accurate modern song to describe the anti-heroine of William Makepeace Thackery's novel, Vanity Fair. While the original story cast Becky Sharp in the role of a truly manipulative, heartless, grasping and cynical woman with the slightly sociopathic tendancies of using people to advance her social status and ruining them [either financially or emotionally] in the process, the Becky Sharp depicted in Mira Nair's 2004 adaptation is a plucky protagonist, played by the ever-charming Reese Witherspoon. With her strawberry blonde curls and "Elle Woods" smile, Reese Witherspoon portrays Becky as an ambitious woman but also one with a big heart, whose struggle to maintain a place in a society where she will never truly belong, is what ultimately causes her self-destruction.
