Homebuilt 3 axis CNC router. This is a fully enclosed design that fits on a workbench. The cutting area is about 16" x 16" x 5.5". X and Y axis are belt drive to achieve high cutting speeds. The cost to build this was less than $450 (not counting the electronics or the router) and requires no special tools to build. No welding, no machining, just basic woodworking skills. It uses a laminate trimmer as the spindle. All linear motion bearings are micro-adjustable so it can be adjusted to a high level of accuracy. The machine is set up with a Xylotex drive board and their 276 oz/in stepper motors. Plans and very detailed build instructions for the machine are available for sale on Ebay. The plans are in a 140 page manual that also includes general information about CNC and CAD/CAM, and even includes a section about machine design if you are interested in building something different than this.   • what is the torque, is there any gear reduction ?

  • @karandex They are 276 oz/in motors. No gear reduction, direct drive with 10 tooth pulleys (XL pitch), which keeps the motors turning at low rpm where they are making the most torque.

  • I purchased your plans today on ebay. I have about 15,000 hours programming and running cnc machines at shipyards. I purchased several different sets of plans off of the internet, to perform a comparative analysis before I decided which unit to build.

    Your plans are by far, the most detailed, and well thought out. Most of the other small machines scream of vibration & dust. As a professional 3d cad designer, I salute you. Excellent workmanship! I'm off to start gathering materials!

  • @jdmissioncontrol Hey, thanks for the kind words. After building a few other designs, with exactly the problems you describe, I designed this machine from the ground up. Rethinking every assumption to solve all the problems that I could think of. I've been very happy with the outcome, and it has been a very reliable and easy to use piece of equipment.

  • nice, how much play in the belt drives ?

  • @lenne0815 With them tensioned correctly there is no play or backlash. The axes are short enough that the belt drive is pretty stiff. I can get a tiny bit of stretch in the X axis belt (front to rear axis) if both the feedrate and the acceleration/deceleration are set very high and it is cutting something like a 90 degree angle where it needs to do a full stop before rapidly changing direction. Then I get like .020" of stretch. But that is an extreme situation. Perfect in normal use.

    I just purchased your plans from ebay, and they look top-notch! I have only given it the quick once-over so far, and must read in much more detail before I really get my hands dirty, but these truly look fantastic! I have the Rockcliff book, and have looked through TONS of online hobby CNC plans, but nothing really struck me as well-designed until I saw your setup.

    Thanks for putting in all the hard work to come up with a great design!
