Hopefully when the sport is well-established the teams will be able to make custom airframes, like in Formula 1.

Actually the Armadillo engine which is powered by liquid oxygen and ethanol, has a variable throttle this comes from a similar design shown in the company's vertical launch rockets.

i think the coolest component of it is the real time telemetry and heads up display they are working on.
the race course is going to be projected onto the HUD as a series of polygons they are going to have to fly through.
