Gun battles and co-ordinated bomb blasts in Nigeria's second-largest city of Kano have left at least 162 people dead and scores others injured. the islamist sect boko haram has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which prompted the government to announce a dusk to dawn curfew in the city. kano, like other cities in the north, has been plagued by an insurgency led by boko haram, with bombings and shootings aimed mainly at government targets.
