It's unfortunate because we know Chaplin used it in a way that was meant to be funny, not offensive. People still love and respect Charlie Chaplin and he was using that mustache before Hitler, so he can be forgiven for it. It's become too easily identifiable with Hitler though, simply because that was the look he chose for himself and as the world's most dangerous dictator, anything tied to him was an ugly reminder of his evil. People rarely use the name Adolf anymore because of him.

It's really a shame. I have a Charlie Chaplin ventriloquist doll (not the antique, but a replica) and it is a sad that an evil tyrant can pretty much trademark a look that Chaplin did first.

That's a much more vague taboo in regards to Nazis. Nobody's gonna stop wearing boots because the Nazis wore them. But his mustache pretty much was the thing by which most people immediately identified him. You have a man as murderous and influential as Hitler was, his image and anything that built on his image WILL strike a bad chord with people. Hitler was the most prominent wearer of that mustache, so naturally Hitler's the first person to come to mind, so it is in fact a social taboo now.
