Originally featured in the January 2011 issue of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine: It's the ultimate self-build story. Rob and Alithea Dawson bought a 35-acre woodland site for £10,000 and spent seven years in a mobile home trying to get planning on it. They have eventually built themselves a remarkable home in oak on a DIY basis for just £98,500. Read more at http://www.homebuilding.co.uk/your-projects/amazing-low-cost-self-build

  • Lost Cost my butt. That is currently $155,521.65 U.S. dollars. That might be low cost if you are rich and privileged. I am tired of this idea that people can buy land and build a home for a low cost, when in fact this is out of the majorities grasp. Low cost would be a max of one years income.

  • Don't get me wrong. I think it is a very nice looking home and one that I would be very happy to own. I just don't think that it would fall into the low cost category. Regardless though it is a beautiful home.

  • a nice white coat of pain on the outside would make it looks just as pleasing on the inside. Still a very nice cozy house I'd live in.

  • @3GBlog well, i dont know about 700k but at least 300k, looks nice on inside... little dumpy from the outside.

  • @asleeperj i would like to see this "nice" house for 20,000 usd. 600 sq ft? sub standard materials? no garage? tell ya what, u take that house for 20k build it 8 times bigger for 160k, and i will buy it from ya and give ya all the beer you want :)

  • @asleeperj You're so right - this is England, where a gallon of diesel is currently pushing £1.50 per litre. That's about $10 per gallon. We envy your living costs.

  • @AcNoLegment You won't find termites in Wales with its granite rocks, rain and freezing winters.

  • @TheManFromAlaska You can build yourself a nice house for 20,000 USD, but this in england, housing is far more expensive there. In the US this would go for maybe 50K. Hell, me, a few friends and a couple of cases of beer later, and we could make that house for less than 50k USD.

  • @JohnnyMotel99

    yea. spiders suck ass

  • @TheManFromAlaska - The median price of a home in the US is about $175,000.00 depending on what area you live in.

  • funny enough, I run a domestic cleaning company in the UK...and guess what...I do see houses like this all the time...and they are full of cobwebs.

It seems that the spiders just love all that wood to make their webs. Cleaning all the nooks & crannies, just costs the customer extra.

However, I do like exposed beams, just not the extra cleaning that goes with it....

  • IDEAL:)
