PLEASE COMMENT & RATE: This is a video I shot of myself reciting Kevin Spacey's closing speech from the movie AMERICAN BEAUTY. It was shot on my SONY Mavica and edited using Windows Movie Maker. This monologue was done in sections, one take only for each section. This video is dedicated to my acting teacher and Oracle, JT Wagner of The Acting Factory in New York City. • Although the text of this monologue reads "Gratitude" . . . the emotion that Kevin Spacey and the music convey in the movie . . . is really "Forgiveness", instead.

And the interpetation in this video . . . is closer to "Acceptance".

These are admittedly subtle distinctions . . . but they're what a proper acting method should allow you to realize.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on this video. When I recorded it, it was the day after I sliced off my fingertip at work (watch closely at the end and you will see the huge bandage on my finger at 2:42). I was still in a great deal of pain and was feeling that it was a sign that I am meant to be an actor and nothing else. I also intended for it to be truthful to me and not be a copy of Kevin Spacey. Thanks again!

  • where did you train in amercia then?

  • I've studied at Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry; The New York Academy of Theatrical Arts (Gordon Philips) in NYC, The Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Startford, CT; Stanivslaski & Michael Chekov at SUNY Purchase College, Purchase, NY, J.T. Wagner and The Method for Film, Mike LaGuardia Commercial Acting Technique; The New Group Theatre, CT ... dang ... time to sign up for more classes! :D Experience is a great teacher.

  • hi quick question did you train at any drama school in the uk, like rada or mountview or guildford?

  • Hi. No, I have not been to England. But I just finished a picture with Jeff Stewart from TV's THE BILL and he was such a delight to work with and has invited to come visit him and his mum in England. I've studied here in America.

  • @piasillo Your acting resonated sincerity and honesty. I felt forgiving humor at the end and that was a nice touch:) Keep up with the good work. You are a good actor.

  • @piasillo HI Peter...good job on the monologue. I have a qeustion: is this movie your favourite of all time and if so why?

It is my all time favourite for a lot of reasons.

    Greg, UK, Scotland.

  • FANTASTIC JOB!...your timing is excellent, of course the music adds to the scene but still very well performed...keep it up. Daman

  • i want u to to the inch by inch monologue that pacino did in any given sunday.... i bet u would that monologue. u should it.

  • @greenrate (Sorry, a host. And evokes, not envokes! This is my age showing. Just ignore the mistakes!). Regret (I recently threw away a bunch of love letters and Valentine's gifts from a woman who had hurt me. I already regret it, as they were a memory of an important part of my life, gone forever now), gratitude, a feeling of understanding or empathy, etc. This is the effect music has on me. About Spacey's interpretation, I'll have to listen to it again, I'm sure the music influenced me a lot.

  • @greenrate I find music a very powerful medium that envokes certain emotional responses from the listener, and when used judiciously within film can make for the most memorably poignant scenes. Whenever I hear the sountrack from this film in particular my heart really does fill up like a balloon. I think it makes me think back over my own life, which has seen some poignant moments also. Images and sounds from my past flood my mind and I have to fight back the tears. I host of emotions swamp me..
