This was just a quick video showing the aquaponics setup in my greenhouse. The fish are from my lake and a nearby river. There is one 8 inch bass and about 50 baitfish (various) with 3 large shrimp. The timer is set up to run for 30 minutes every 6 hours. The idea is to remove the fish waste using the plant roots as a filter. If too much fish waste is produced it can be removed at the strainer. I need to achieve a balance of fertilizer and fresh neutral ph high oxygen 80 deg water for healthy fish and plants. All of the water is recirculated.

  • You'll probably need to add a biofilter since you only have the one growbed with media; or add more growbeds :-)

  • @LowCarbTNPer Thanks for the input. I am not sure what a biofilter is or why I need it. If you could explain it might help others trying this setup to avoid future problems.

  • @onecraftydude It's basically just something for the beneficial bacteria to grow in to convert your ammonia to nitrates and nitrites. A simple biofilter would be a 55 gallon drum with water coming in at the bottom and flowing up through some scrubbies or other material with a lot of surface area for bacteria to grow on. I'll PM you a link to a simple setup since URLs aren't allowed in comments.

  • Awesome cant wait to see what happens

  • Cool ,,I would have to add frogs though ,,the big eating size to tadpole grow in tank and then loose around the ground..a cricket bed(bet they will nest in the coconut hair nests) to have food for both fish and frog,,,,never too broke to dream ..Hope ya have a great harvest ..

  • very impressed ... great project ... I have been told this is a tricky technology to get right but some report great results ... love your use of materials ... I think some of that stuff might have gone missing from my junk pile ???
