BMW's straight 6 engines are one of the best engines ever made. The one they used in the M1 in the late 70's was designed to safely take 1000hp, and the M10/M12 4 cylinder BMW engine originally designed in 1961 was raced in Formula 1 with Brabham and was world champion in 1983. In qualifying that engine produced over 1400hp from a 1,5litre 4 cylinder turbo.
