    WOW! People commenting here are truly amazingly idiotic. Go and build your own human-powered helicopter and post a video before you talk all that smack about this effort. No, wait... First go to college, study engineering, get a degree, go to grad school, understand advanced concepts of physics, THEN build your own and tell us all how awesome you are. Dumbasses...

    I am laughing at GunterYang's hysterical post. I'm an aeronautical engineering major, and while I find this feat interesting, it is not impressive for me in the science behind it but a curiosity that of all the things a large group of people could have gone after with their knowledge, it would have been this. Why not have worked on a reusable low-earth rocket for small payload deployments (a project that many departments are now competing for). Now that would have been impressive.

    the degrees not even necessary, so really understand physics, and build, those are the only steps

    Hmm, it seems to me that very heavy gearing would be appropriate here, yet she's pedalling furiously. With a much heavier gear ratio, she would start out MUCH slower, and could be pedalling as slow as the gearing allows (literally could be one pedal rotation to 25 blade rotations).

    I hope this project goes much further!

    Fair enough. One does not necessarily need to go to school to learn enough to make this thing. But working with a team of folks who are well read in the relevant topics sure helps.

    * I think I made the original comment after watching some "free energy" machine videos so I was a bit worked up over people's understanding of how things really work..

    @GunterYang

    Your retaliation is warranted but doesn't make sense. Yes, a lot of effort was put in here and good for them for achieving results. However, don't inflate the requirements to put something like this together. Most inventors out there are/were dropouts. Also, the Gamera looks exactly like the Yuri on a diet - so where's the innovation? (agreed I don't know the design details but why make something that looks the same? Try something different)
