Czech New Wave filmmaker Frantisek Vlacil (Marketa Lazarova) directs this poetic, startlingly realistic drama set during the Middle Ages. A young man is sent to live and study with a religious order after his father re-marries a very young woman. The boy's residency with the order prompts existential reflection and the questioning of his fundamental beliefs.
