Headline: DT Could Be Spring 2000 Takeover Target
According to a German magazine, Deutsche Telekom the third largest phone company in the world, could be a takeover target if the German government decides to sell off its stake in the company.
The Monday edition of Germanys Der Spiegel reported the countrys finance minister could decide to sell off the German governments 22% stake in Deutsche Telekom a stake worth about 32 billion US dollars.
According to analysts, if such a large chunk of the highly-valued company goes on the market, a leveraged buyout of the entire company can not be ruled out.
Like most European telecoms, DT was once a government-owned monopoly. But over the years, the German government has been selling off portions of its Deutsche Telekom holding to the public.
According to German law, the finance minister will be able to sell off the final 22% interest in DT in May 2000.
