The "strain" in his voice is in choice spots for emphasis, not because his chords are getting raw or tired. He's using his vocal talents in a non-traditional and thoughtful way. The lead singer's voice, and the band, are extremely unique, very emotionally charged in their vocal expressions, and really a breath of fresh air in a stagnant traditional landscape of music. I don't agree with your painful to listen to assertion, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. =)
