We left a gaggle of Harley riders to take pictures with our borrowed Ferrari and headed into the petrified forest. The forest was studied by famed horticulturalist, Luther Burbank, who lived nearby in Santa Rosa. He discovdered that over three million years ago a volcano near todays Mt. St. Helena, just seven miles away, wiped out the forest. The ash encapsulated the trees and hardened into stone.
