Muskie FLy Fishing is growing in popularity, with that growth comes many questions from anglers all across the country looking for more information. The most asked questions I get are about rigging leaders and bite tippets. I have used Single Strand Titanium for over 4 years, it is by far the best. The diameter of 20 pound test Titanium wire is about .011, thats about the same diameter as most 12 pound test lines, or 0X tippet material! The fish simply cant see this stuff and it is flexible enough to allow the fly to move naturally through the water. It is incredibly tough stuff, it lasts longer and will not easily kink as do other types of stranded tieable wires. I wont use Tyger or Surflon, that stuff kinks up in seconds. In very dark, stained water, you might be able to get away with that stuff, but in clearer waters or where Muskies get lots of looks at lots of different types of tackle, you had better go in as stealthy as possible - if you want to catch fish.

I could use 80 to 100 pound test hard mono, but that really defeats the purpose of trying to go as invisible as possible - 80 to 100 pound test mono is about .045 in diameter, you might as well be using piano wire! I have been cut off on the strike by 50 + inch Muskies using 50 or 60 pound test Fluorocarbon Tippets - it only takes once, (twice in my case), to lose the fish of a lifetime without ever having the chance to screw it up yourself to know you need to be using better terminal tackle!

In the past 4 years that I have been using single strand Titanium, I have never lost a fish due to a failure of this wire or knot system. Thats over 600 Muskies with 7 over 50 inches!

I always thought tying on a fly was simple and straightforward, but when dealing with very powerful fish like Muskies, I soon, found out they required some special handling. The knots really arent that special, just applying them properly is ultra important. Here is the proven knot I have used for the past 4 years when attaching the fly to Single Strand Titanium Tippet. It is just a simple Clinch Knot, but if you tie it the way I have shown, you will not have any problems or difficulties with it.

  • If you go to my webpage and look at my blog you can get more info. I use about 16" of the Titanium wire, then about 12 inches of 30 pound test shock tippet - these are both shown in the video. The Leader Butt is 40 # test Maxima Ultragreen, the length depends on the density of your fly line - Floating/Intermediate/Sinking, the deeper you want the fly to go the shorter the leader butt. I usually use a total leader length of about 5 to 7 feet.
