people that care about quality get vinyl, not cds, so, yeah, cds are obsolete at least on music. you can use them for computers and video game consoles, which is more suited to a digital medium. sound is analogue in reality, so, high quality analogue sound like vinyl is as good as it gets!

However, both Sony and Philips would be sued for patent infringement by DiscoVision Associates due to the CD's use of reflective optical disc scanning technology (case was settled). That patent is currently owned by Pioneer.
And the idea of the CD was actually first patented by James Russel, an American, in the late 1960s.

CD was created under a collaboration between Philips and Sony. Philips originally tried to develop the format, but did not have all the technology required to make it practical, which was where Sony came in, specifically improvements and suggestions in the digital encoding specifications and error correction.

Of course, it is ironic to point out that Compact Disc is digital.
I think you mean "all hail the internet era."

I remember these days....That is a huge stereo at :19 and later on, that is a huge portable CD player.... I do NOT miss the old days because of that, I still have a back ache from carrying that shit around!!! All hail the digital era!

And Sony as well, the invention of the CD was a joint effort between Sony & Philips.
The legacy of this is even present in the name for the digital interface most higher-end CD players (and some soundcards and such) have: Sony/Philips Digital Interface, aka SPDIF, aka Coaxial digital out (with the orange-colored female RCA jack).

cd was created by Philips
Are cds and portable cd players obsolete? Some people think so, but I think they are still useful for some things. It's also good to have a high quality hard copy instead of just a download.

CDs aren't obsolete to people who care about quality. You better ask the kids these days about MP3s.
